Abstract:

Contains an original pen-and-ink calligraphic and hand-illustrated resolution of "sincere thanks" on vellum (mounted on board), presented to Mrs. E.P. Stevens by the Board of Managers of the Ladies' Seamens' Friend Society of the Port of San Francisco on September 20, 1876, for her role in persuading Congress to transfer ownership of federally owned land and hospital building to the city of San Francisco for the purpose of founding a boarding home for sailors. The illustration on the resolution depicts a miniature view of the Golden Gate strait in 1876 with the Marin lighthouse and two sailing vessels. The Ladies' Seamen's Friend Society of the Port of San Francisco was incorporated on August 4, 1858. Largely run by women, the Society operated a boarding house for sailors that had been previously used as a United States Marine Hospital on federally owned property. In 1876, Mrs. E.P. Stevens traveled to Washington, D.C. and met with President Grant and members of Congress where she persuaded them to pass a bill transferring ownership of the hospital and land to the city of San Francisco.
